Miranda Cosgrove

I thought she was just another one of the MANY teen stars that kick started their careers on kid/teen TV networks. I know Miranda was in a show on Nickelodeon, though I've never watched it before.

When I heard she was releasing an album, I didn't think anyone was gonna take it seriously.
But turns out it's quite a mature sound, the single Kissin U is a decent, above average effort.
If another girl her age sang this song it probably be more teen-ish and cheezy, but again there's maturity to her appeal.

This girl has charisma. A good voice too!

Nelly - Folklore

When u hear the name Nelly Furtado most ppl either think of:

1. The innocent 'I'm Like A Bird' girl from her debut back in 2000
OR
2. When she made it big time with her 3rd album Loose (remember Promiscuous, Maneater, Say It Right?)

It's surprising that not many remember her 2nd effort Folklore in between the two phases mentioned above. Folklore was really a gem. It wasn't as commercial as Loose, but it was ORIGINAL. And that made it edgy and cool. To be honest I know nothing about folk music, but I guess Nelly's take on it was more urban and funky than what you would expect conventional folk music to be.

My favourite Nelly songs are from this album. Check out Powerless and the rocking track Explode!

Get Outta My Way

Yes by now it's official that 'Get Outta My Way' will be Kylie's second single of the Aphrodite album. I intend to write more on the album, but for now enjoy this track which has an incredible feel good vibe to it.
The music video is expected for a September release! :)

What’s the worst thing that could happen to you
Take a chance tonight and try something new
You’re getting boring you’re oh so boring
And I don’t recognize the zombie you’ve turned into

Don’t worry cause tonight I got you
You can take a seat do what you normally do
I’m about to let you see
This is what’ll happen if you ain’t giving your girl what she needs

Leave you Move on
To a perfect stranger
You talk I walk
Wanna feel the danger
See me with him and its turning you on it’s got me saying
Ain’t getting me back at the end of this song

Get outta my way
Get outta my way
Got no more to say
He’s taken your place

Get outta my way, way
Outta my way
Got no more to say
He’s taken your place
Get outta my way

Now I got a taste I wanna explore
Ain’t going to waste no not anymore
You’re going hard now to win my heart but
Too many times now you’ve been coming up short

Don’t worry cause tonight I got you
You can take a seat do what you normally do
I’m about to let you see
This is what’ll happen if you ain’t giving your girl what she needs

Leave you Move on
To a perfect stranger
You talk I walk
Wanna feel the danger
See me with him and its turning you on it’s got me saying
Ain’t getting me back at the end of this song

Get outta my way
Get outta my way
Got no more to say
He’s taken your place

Get outta my way, way
Outta my way
Got no more to say
He’s taken your place
Get outta my way

No I aint going home cause I wanna stay
But I wont be alone no how no way
Now I showed you what I’m made of made of
This is what’ll happen if you ain’t giving your girl what she needs

Leave you Move on
To a perfect stranger
You talk I walk
Wanna feel the danger
See me with him and its turning you on it’s got me saying
Ain’t getting me back at the end of this song

Get outta my way
Get outta my way
Got no more to say
He’s taken your place

B.O.B & Airplanes

B.O.B - This guy is big in the States now.
Don't know much about this rapper, except that he's new. I'm sure you have heard him on radio - his song with Bruno Mars called 'Nothin on You' is a smash hit.

Speaking of Bruno Mars, he did another song with Travis McCoy (frontman of Gym Class Heroes) called 'Billionaire' which happens to have the same vibe as Nothin on You. Both worth downloading.

Back to B.O.B and his new single, featuring Hayley Williams the red haired vocalist of Paramore. Wow it seems everyone is doing collaborations now! Most of it has been magic. Their song 'Airplanes' is pretty cool, but I admit I wouldn't have paid attention to it if not for Hayley.

A lot of times that's how a rap song works best. If it were purely rap from start to end, it just would not gain as many fans (non-rap listeners) than if it were to incorporate some vocals, especially female vocals. *think Jay Z and Alicia Keys on Empire State of Mind*

Kelis goes Acapella

You might remember Kelis for her 'Milkshake', heck that was all I remembered about her until I heard Acapella. It's the first single from her new album Flesh Tone. However the other tracks don't quite compare to Acapella.

If not mistaken, Kelis is singing about her son in Acapella.
Fantastic dance track for the summer, her voice goes smoothly with the melody.

For this album Kelis collaborated with DJ David Guetta who is doing really well, working with many artists and bringing dance music mainstream in the US.

Check out Acapella and the rest of Flesh Tone at MySpace:

I realized the player at MySpace streams faster than YouTube! :)

Sara: King of Anything

Fresh this week!

Sara Bareilles is back with her sophomore album 'Kaleidoscope Heart'. Yet to hear the whole of it, but if it's anything like first single 'King of Anything', we can expect an edgier sound than her debut album.

I follow Sara on Twitter and she says the darnest things. Seems fame has not caught on to her, she's still her usual quirky "say what I wanna say" self. It's refreshing because she stays real, like the girl from the neighbourhood that everyone knows and love.

Sara is the approachable pianist-singer-song writer, her musical style is relaxed with minimal fuss. A breath of fresh air compared to the heavily produced sounds on radio now.

Guns and Horses

Something about British female artists that's so unique.
Musically so distinct from American pop singers, it's not just the accent, but the style.

The unique quality probably started with Lily Allen, then Kate Nash. They set the path for the other girls. Now there's too many to name. I like Paloma Faith and Marina and the diamonds.
Obviously there is Amy Winehouse and Duffy with the voice that was so talked about, but I'm more interested in the 'synth pop' genre.

Synthpop is pretty interesting, lengthy to explain so you can check this out
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthpop

With synthpop you think of Little Boots, La Roux and Ellie Goulding. Edgy.

Ellie Goulding
had a great start to her career by topping the BBC Sound of 2010 poll, as well as winning the Critics Choice Award at the 2010 Brit Awards which is a notable achievement.

Her debut single Starry Eyed is catchy, but I'm liking her 2nd much more. Check out the video for Guns and Horses.
